Glamour, Fashion, and Technology
Launched Luxlock with Burnett New York, featured in Glamour’s recently published “30 Years of Women Who Have Reshaped the World”. Collab swag moved us in for a special VIP gift. Inside you’ll find inspiring speeches, moving stories, and new original content from Diane von Furstenberg, Emily Burnett, Shonda Rhimes, Samantha Bee, Betty Reid Soskin, and more. Shop with a stylist at Burnett New York.
You could do this with a headline or slogan (such as VW’s “Drivers Wanted” campaign), color or layout (Target’s new colorful, simple ads are a testimony to this) or illustration (such as the Red Bull characters or Zoloft’s depressed ball and his ladybug friend). All good advertising copy is comprised of the same basic elements.
Stylish & Flexible
Luxlock’s live-Style Chat is just one feature in our Experience Platform helping brands bypass Facebook Ad’s to connect directly to their customers and build custom online shopping experiences people can feel. We built software for professional talent and the savviest of shoppers to connect, shop, and feel like they belong. They are the center of everything we do but know it has to backflow into the systems the industry already uses. Change is painful, shopping alone should be a choice, and talented product experts should never be unemployed when they outperform ads.
Emily Burnett is the Co-Founder, Co-CEO and Creative Director for Burnett New York, a luxury evening and RTW apparel brand. Emily co-founded the eponymous luxury line after having gained international renown and industry recognition during her 10-year tenure at New York’s premier luxury design house, Dennis Basso. As Creative Director for Dennis Basso, Burnett’s signature aesthetic helped the house cement its reputation for feminine sensibility and detailed craftsmanship across evening wear, evening-inspired sportswear, and bridal.
“We believe in the confidence that an expertly-crafted garment can inspire and evangelize personal style as a symbol of independence.”- Emily Burnett
For more than 80 years, Glamour has celebrated powerful women. The magazine relaunched in 1943 as a place for “the girl with a job,” and that mission to amplify ambitious, driven women has remained. Nowhere is that more evident than during our annual Women of the Year Awards.
Launched in 1990, Women of the Year (or WOTY, as we call it) has become a living history of the evolution of women’s power across film, politics, sports, activism, science, and more industries. Each year feminist heroes like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Michelle Obama, and Malala Yousafzai are honored alongside women working hard to change the world on a more grassroots level. Their causes and stories are diverse, but they all share one thing in common: They inspire us.
In 2020, Luxlock launched with 25 Female Founded brands. Many of which we met at Project Entrepreneur in 2018 when it was sponsored by Rent the Runway. Over the years we continued to build our businesses and lean on each other's industry experience to solve some of the hairy problems that have plagued even the largest fashion brands. Retail is natively omnichannel but software has yet to meet the demands of the business. There are hundreds of reasons why consumer shopping experiences online are empty and a million more that lead to failed implementations. At the core we might say the wrong people are in the room, but we have brilliant talent in the industry. It's easy to say that our industry does not cultivate innovation or reward those who challenge the status quo. But, the fashion industry is like most; fear of the unknown, executives prefer control over chaos. Large companies typically lead with proven and measurable growth strategies while tech companies have permission to throw spaghetti on the wall — and see what sticks.
A Perfect Template for Your Business
We wanted to create a record of all these achievements, as well as a manual for success that women today — and tomorrow — can use as a guide. Which is why we’re proud to announce Glamour: 30 Years of Women Who Have Reshaped the World, a new book with Abrams Books that is now available.
Our Female Founder Pilot Pool is a group of top-notch operators that may not have been in the limelight, but they were the powerhouses behind the curtain. They were intentionally chosen because of their experience, mindset, and alignment of vision. Our team is grateful to be working closely with passionate change-makers that are dedicating extensive resources to elevate their customer’s online shopping experiences and break down business processes that should be extinct. We recognize that working together will 10x our impact. We’ve designed, planned, distributed, and lead some of the largest brands in the world. We’ll be the first one to say “let them lead” and how can we help.
Emily and Sterling met in 2016 when Emily began to design Sterling’s custom Dennis Basso wedding gown. Sterling was so impressed with Emily’s designs and craftsmanship that one fitting lead to a meeting and before they knew it the Collection was coming down the runway at New York Fashion Week.
Sterling McDavid is the Co-Founder, Co-CEO, and President of Burnett New York, where she is responsible for sales, marketing, and finance. McDavid is also the Founder and CEO of the Starling Project, a social impact luxury home fragrance line. Prior to launching The Starling Project, Sterling was an analyst at Goldman Sachs.
Fashion and Finance have always been one, in fact, you can’t have one without the other — the math just doesn’t work. They don’t call it Polo University because of the uniform. While Silicon Valley Data Scientists work with algorithms and pull insights out of unstructured data to connect the dots to move a needle. New York’s retail industry is working in excel and comparing the number of v-lookups it took to build a database for scenario planning necessary to hit plan and show an incremental increase. New York and Silicon Valley should spend more time in the same room with a whiteboard.
Burnett New York is a women-owned-and-run design house built on the philosophy that fashion is power. From the classroom to the boardroom, the sidewalk to the red carpet.
The fashion and beauty industry is the largest business opportunity for women to move into tech by the droves. If companies are following the consumer demand to drive digital transformation and sustainability initiatives; note that 52% of the population and 80% of global household purchasing power is held by women. The impact of women leading retail technology, redesigning the supply chain, and rethinking product categories over the next 5 years would produce expansive growth with rapid innovation. From running the business to architecting the future of the industry, women-run companies are the future of retail.
